Drawing Instruction: Drawing Hands

By: R. Schmidt

It's critical never to guess how a hand looks. Also the best draftsmen hold up the hand they're not using in front of them as a model when they're drawing hands. Also you should buy a pocket-sized mirror and use it to look at your hand from the front or to transform your left hand into a right hand.

A often repeated novice's fault is to draw the hands overly small. You have to examine the proportions carefully when you sketch a hand. As a guideline, place your palm in front of your face. Notice how it goes the entire space from the chin to your hairline. Keep that in mind especially when you draw hands on or near people's faces in your sketchings.

Whilst beginning to learn to draw hands it's best to depict a unstrained hand position first. Note how the digits are not unbent when the hand is unstrained. They always bow a little, the pinkie to a higher degree the forefinger.

At first analyze the dimensions of your digits. Look at your digits with the palm turned down. You will note that the digits are around half the length of the complete hand. Every finger consists of three parts of dissimilar lengths. The topmost section (including the nail) is about two-thirds of the middle part, and the middle part is about two-thirds of the lowest part (which ends at the knuckles).

Here for some magic! Turn your palm all over so you view it from the palm side. The dimensions of the digits have changed now dramatically! The digits now appear shortened. If you measure them you will see they are a lot less than half the length of the complete hand. The reason: the skin between the fingers appears as element of the palm.

Also notice that the three parts of the digits now are all of almost same length. When drawing hands it's very crucial to keep in mind this so you do not make the mistake of drawing the same digits no matter which way you view them.

The thumb is a totally distinct story, so do not sketch it as yet another finger. It only has two joints, not three, goes in a distinct direction and has a completely distinct form so study it carefully. You must also notice how it bends lightly when fully extended.

Sketching other hand postures

The following most common hand postures you ought to test to sketch is the fist. Notice that the knuckle joints do not end up in a straight line and that the forefinger and frequently the middle finger stick out more than the other digits.

Once you've mastered sketching unstrained hands and fists, start drawing hands that point someplace or grab items. At last you should also test sketching hands that are in motion.

Exercise these postures over and over applying your own hand as a model. In just a few hours you'll recognize a great improvement in your abilities and can commence adding a lot of hand postures to your repertory.
