Decisions Decisions. Are You Paralyzed From Choosing Between The Plethora Of Massage Courses Available? This Will Help.

By: Sheila Evans

How to become a massage therapist? Simply undertake one of the many massage courses and there you go. Hmmm, sounds simple but first you need to decide which massage course to take! Therapeutic massage comes in many forms (and they often overlap). So to aid you, here is a non exhaustive overview of the main forms of massage therapy to give you more of an idea hopefully it will make your decision a little easier.

General Body Massage / Leisure Massage: More of gentle body massage generally applied or focused to a local zone of the body. The purpose is to relax the client and ease their tension away. It may be argued this is the most common massage therapist training.

Medical Massage: A physician examines the patient and determines the diagnosis. Afterward the massage therapist concentrates on the affected areas of the patient to improve healing and increase comfort.

Manual Lymphatic Massage: A gentle massage therapy taught in lymphatic massage courses, that helps remove excess body fluid in the body's lymph system (part of the body's immune and tissue drainage system).

Swedish Massage: A collection of pressure, movements and touch to different depths of the skin/muscles to relieve tension/stress, relax the body and facilitate healing.

Shiatsu Massage / Acupressure Massage: Shiatsu means "finger pressure" in Japanese. Pressure is focused through the fingers or hand which manipulates the structure of the body so improving the energy flow of the body. This is hoped to help in the improving and maintenance of health. Both these massage courses as far as I can understand are the same thing but Shiatsu massage is an older more traditional form. To also increase the benefit of the treatment, massage is often added.

Reflexology Massage: Finger and thumb pressure is applied to zones of the feet and occasionally the ears and hands. Why? Well, it is believed that there are reflex points on the feet and via energy pathways are connected to the organs and systems of the body. Reflexology massage courses teach that stimulation of these points affects and improve the functioning of the body.

Sports / Remedial Massage: Both sports and remedial massage use a firmer massage than in general massage. This massage therapy is used to help heal injuries and also aid in there prevention. As well as removing the stresses and strains from sporting pursuits, people who are muscular and/or have very physical occupations can also benefit therefore improving functioning and performance.

Thai Massage: This massage therapy is believed to stimulate body energy pathways to improve health. It tends to be deeper and stronger than a relaxing massage and can be sometimes a focal pressure to specific areas of the body or a general body massage.

Reiki Massage: It is commonly reported that Reiki itself involves the practitioners' hands being still. It is believed that energy via the practitioner is channeled into the clients' body through energy centers on the body (Chakras) to improve healing. Some practitioners, to make it a more holistic massage therapy, simply add the benefits of massage to the mix to enhance the desired effect.

Aromatherapy Massage: Massage of the whole or part of the body with a view to creating a general effect on the body. Essential oils with properties that hopefully heighten the benefit given by the massage itself are also used.

The interaction and concern of the massage practitioner increases all the forms of massage to make them a more holistic massage therapy. So which ever massage school|institute you attend for your massage training, you should have a rewarding and diverse career. If you cannot decide between your future massage jobs, don't worry. First learn what excites you the most to get yourself started and add subsequent massage courses to your tool box later. Eventually you are likely to see a client and be able to draw on whatever technique you feel is going to suit them the best.

Sheila Evans hopes you found the article beneficial and hopes you now have more confidence when decidng which massage courses to choose from.
