Carpet Cleaning Methods

By: Rafal Szmit

During a recession because people cannot and do not move house, they look to improve their homes, re-decorate and have their carpets professionally cleaned until the market picks up. Carpet cleaning is available in many forms: do-it-yourself, wet cleaning, dry cleaning, or hiring a professional. Carpet cleaning is a cost effective and good way of restoring your carpets. The type you choose will depend on how much cleaning you need and the type of carpeting you're cleaning. For spot cleaning in homes, many spray-on solutions are available, either as foaming agents or liquid.

Four popular carpet cleaning methods are Shampooing, Dry foam (Dry Cleaning), Dry Powder and Hot Water Extraction (Steam Cleaning).

Shampooing is the use of a motorized circular brush in which foaming cleaning products are introduced to the surface of the carpet and are then scrubbed into the carpet. The theory in the shampoo method is to generate a lot of foam in the carpet, allow this foam to dry, have the resulting residue attract the soil, and vacuum up the residue and soil the next day. Shampooing has extremely good agitation. This method, unless it is used with some other type of carpet cleaning London, has no extraction in the cleaning process but rather relies on vacuuming after the shampoo dries. It it the oldest method of carpet cleaning. Because of it's high aggressiveness, and the large amounts of cleaning product residue it leaves, this method is not recommended for most cut pile residential carpet.

Dry foam (Dry Cleaning) is very similar to shampooing in that it relies on the aggressiveness of the brushing action, which is usually counter rotating cylindrical brushes. This method has the same weaknesses as Shampooing with the additional one of not being able to deep clean. In this method, dry absorbent compound (containing small amounts of water) is sprinkled over carpet or worked into the carpet with a machine. This purpose of this cleaner is to attract and absorb soil. Mechanical agitation from a brush works the cleaner through the carpet. The theory is that the liquids dissolve the soil and this soil/detergent/solvent mixture is absorbed into the carrier and is then vacuumed up. This method has the advantage of drying very quickly because of the small amount of moisture used. This method may be considered as an interim cleaning between more effective deep cleanings. Soapy and sticky residue from conventional shampoo and dry foam methods of cleaning can cause rapid re-soiling of your carpet.

Hot water extraction is sometimes referred to as 'Steam Cleaning.' Steam cleaning is generally the most expensive method of cleaning your carpets. This is the only cleaning method classified as "deep cleaning". All the others are considered "light surface cleaning" because they are incapable of removing soil deep in the pile. A hot cleaning solution is sprayed onto the carpet and almost immediately extracted, taking the dissolved dirt and grit with it into a recovery tank.

Dry Powder, a dry product (powder or ground corn cobs that have been soaked with a solvent chemical) is broadcast over the area to be cleaned. In this method, hot cleaning solution is sprayed under pressure onto the carpet and is immediately extracted with a vacuum source. This method has the fastest drying times of all carpet cleaning methods and has the advantage of being able to be walked on almost immediately after cleaning. Dry powder cleaning does a fairly good job of cleaning the top 1/3 of the fiber that is visible if it is not heavily soiled. It is quick, convenient and leaves the carpet deep-cleaned, fresh, looking great unlike the old outdated traditional cleaning methods using hot water and soap the carpets are usable immediately.

Carpet cleaning is something that every homeowner will have to deal with at some time or another if carpeting is inside their home Apart from the fact that Carpet Cleaning london is very hard work, the major cause of problems associated with carpet cleaning is inexperienced operatives over-wetting the carpet. Water left in the carpet can cause mold, stretching, damage to the sub floor, and damage to the adhesive to name just a few of the problems. By knowing the type of carpet you have you can determine the correct amount of water and solution to use so you don't encounter any of the problems from too much water. Professional carpet cleaners London are not only familiar with the various types of carpet fibres, but also know what type of treatment should be used for every fibre.
